AbstractWhen looking back the history of the geographical indications (Gls) of intellectual property, basic disputes on Gls has largely been between European countries and the U.S.A, South Africa, Australia, etc (the new world settled by European immigrants) since European people immigrated to the new world. TRIPS Agreement (1994) under the WTO has important meaning in the protection of the Gls by providing powerful regulations especially for wines and spirits under the influence of European countries. However, the Gis may be used for a wide variety of agricultural products and indigenous assets like rice and handicrafts. The TRIPS Agreement regulates the time limit for developed countries by January 1, 1995, for developing countries by January 1, 2000, and for least developed countries until January 1, 2006 to comply with. Therefore, this research reviews several developed countries' legal systems to protect the Gls as well as present situation and main issues of Thailand in this regard. Finally, some suggestions have been made for Thailand and other developing countries to enhance the intellectual property system, especially for the protection of geographical indications.
