AbstractThe flash flood of May 4, 2001 brought great damage to properties and life at Amphoe Wang Chin, Phrae province Northern Thailand. Heavy rainfall triggered landslides on the steep mountain slopes. Debris of landslides played a role in temporary blockage of the flood flow in upstream channel area resulting in a build up of flood level. Bursting of the blockage led to a much increase in flash flood velocity and flow that violently caused damages at Ban Hong village in Wang Chin area. The study was concentrated on landslides in Mae Suai and Mae Pung basins that occupied an area about 341 square kilometers. On geology of the area, sedimentary rocks mainly covered the right side of basins while igneous rock was on the left side. Most of the landslides occurred in the sedimentary terrain. Field and laboratory tests were carried out to assess physical and engineering properties of weathered shale profiles. Typical weathering profile was summarized and correlated to the landslides. Landslide types observed were mainly of erosion, debris slide, earth flow, gullying, soil slump, and debris flow, which their features were described in detail. The study also discussed the effect of typical climatic condition, vegetation, destruction of natural blockage, and role of landslide on flood intensity.
