Abstract | The international standard IS014000 is now becoming more and more popular in China and the government is encouraging enterprises and organizations to adopt IS014000. More than 1000 enterprises and organizations in China have certified IS014000 series, the international standard for environmental management. The efforts in promoting ISO 14000 in China have helped upgrade the efficiency of Chinese enterprises and organizations in their environmental management and improve the environment in the country. The research was conducted to analyze the rationale to go green and the benefits and costs of implementing an IS014000 EMS in Chongqing Kansai Paint Company, an enterprise in China. To fulfill this study information has been gathered through interview with managers of the company and site visits. The results show that the rationale for the company to go green is social responsibility, public image, environmental regulatory compliance, competition and access to markets. The benefits of EMS and IS014000 implementation are: improved environmental performance, improved environmental awareness, enhanced regulatory compliance and regulatory relief, enhanced public image and competitive position, reduced environmental management costs, streamlined management system and potential access to new markets. The costs are staff time and effort, expenditure for both software, such as consulting fees, ISO 14000 registration, and hardware, like installation of pollution treatment facilities. One obvious feature is that economic benefits are not the major outcome obtained from ISO 14000 implementation in short term. The environmental performance improvement and public image enhancement are the immediate benefits of implementing an IS014000 EMS for the company. The economic benefits, such as access to new markets, more market share, increased profit margin etc. are expected to realize in the near future. Finally recommendations and considerations are developed for the company and other Chinese firms. |
