Abstract | A value based management is an approach that help managements to align company's overall aspirations, analytical techniques, and management processes to focus all decision-makings on the key value drivers in order to help company maximize its value. Due to the observation in current banking situation, it is found that total shareholder return of banking sector is under perform the market return. Hence VBM that has the main objective to maximize shareholder value becomes an alternative strategic management. This research demonstrates how managements apply VBM concept in managing shareholder value. In addition, the specific shareholder value driver model for banking business is developed for bank corporate which tend to be more appropriate for the special characteristic of banking business than generic value drivers such as sale growth and operating margin. The model shows how financial value drivers and non-financial value drivers relate and contribute to the shareholder value. Afterward, the value driver analysis including value driver sensitivity and value driver matrix is constructed to develop further strategies around those value drivers. Besides the examples of performance measurement in operational level are determined. The same understanding of VBM and shareholder value technique will lead the company to have the consensus way of making decision toward the shareholder value. The case study establishes the comprehensive understanding of VBM implementation process at banking organization. It is practically shown the benefits, drawbacks and obstacles in adopting VBM concept at bank. In addition, the recommendation framework of how to assess the organization before making decision and implementing the process is described as a direction for banking organization that intends to apply VBM concept. |
