AbstractThe study concentrates on economical and technical analysis for considering the potential of cogeneration in pulp and paper industry during the planning horizon from 2004-2010. Pulp and paper mills are classified into 3 groups: non-extended existing mills, extended existing mills and new mills. The total of pulp and paper mills considered in this study is 21. Potential of cogeneration in pulp and paper indushy is analyzed by two phases: the first is the technical analysis and then is the economical analysis. The technical analysis is to estimates the energy demand (include the heat demand and elech-icity demand) for pulp and paper mills as well as estimates either power match or thermal match for each pulp and paper mill. Technologically, the study would choose the feasible alternatives of cogeneration system for each pulp and paper mill based on limitations of fuel types, technology types, sizes of cogeneration system, etc. Based on these feasible alternatives as indicated above, the economical analysis will identify the best alternative which should be applied for each pulp and paper mill. And then the potential of cogeneration for pulp and paper indushy is re-identified by economical indicators such as IRR, NPV, pay back period, etc. It is found that: (1 ). Economically and technically, the potential capacity of cogeneration for pulp and paper indushy is 200MW; (2). The application of cogeneration for pulp and paper indushy in Vieh1am is cost-effective due to good economical indicators as well as reduction of outlay of each mill for satisfying their energy demand.
