AbstractEurope benefits from its long standing banking system but actlVltles and profits of European commercial banks are questionable to the point that profits are not stable and lessen years after years. Therefore, this research is on the direction to find problems and solutions for European commercial banks, and at the same time reaches to conclude a lesson for emerging countiĀ·ies in coming years. The research uses the bank profitability, financial statements of Banks 2003 of OECD in the period of 1991-2000 of the 12 Western European countries and the software of "Beyond 20/20 Professional Browser", "Excel", "Win.RA TS" to achieve that the Return on Equity of all banks in Europe decrease 2 basic points in the 2 periods of 1991-1995 to 1996-2000. It reveals that number of banks influences the most significantly to the profitability, following by the interest margins and non-interest incomes. The end of this research aims at comparing the determinants of profitability between European banks and Asian banks. The results are regulations help Europe banking converge into a united market while those in Asia bring losses. Moreover, Asian commercial banks limit its business on loans activities while its European counterparts expand its activities to inveshnent in securities and subsidiaries. The matter of ownership effects significantly to the profits of Asian banks while it does not tell much different in European banks.
