AbstractAlong with China entty WTO, of all the industty sectors set to open to foreign competition over the next five years, banking is perhaps the weakest. The four state-owned big banks, which account for more than 60% in terms of total assets in China's commercial banking systems, are technically insolvent, riddled with corruption, and lumbered with management systems that still bear the imprint of socialist economic planning. However, as the banking reform deepens, the banks have sought to be real commercial, prudential, and operating under international banking standards. Better understanding the trade-off between risk and reward, and operating under sound credit risk management system is ve1y critical for all the Chinese banks in this transformation period. This study is in an attempt to define the critical factors regarding credit risk management in Chinese commercial banks by investigating the practice of credit risk management in Bank of China, thereafter comparing to the practices of some foreign banks, and in tum to address generally the success factors in credit risk management in Chinese commercial banks. Based on the critical factors (both positive and negative) in credit risk management, the author proposes a possible solution for Bank of China to improve their credit risk management process, and it might be a reference to other Chinese commercial banks as well.
