Abstract | This study evaluated genetic variation of genetically improved tilapia ( 0. niloticus) under different management conditions in the North of Vietnam. Fish samples were collected from GIFT base strain introduced from Philippines in 1997 (5 111 generation select). Three representative hatcheries at Hainoi, Hung Yen and Hai Phong provinces and two local strains at Hanoi and Hung Yen were sampled. Samples from hatcheries were derived from GIFT base strain. Liver, muscle and heart tissues sample were extracted and used for allozyme electrophoresis. Six strains were evaluated for genetic variability and similarities. Samples were analysed electrophoretically at different protein loci to estimate genetic differences among strains where 6 enzymes showed polymorphic with total 14 loci detected. All strains share 7 monomorphic and 7 variable loci. The observed mean heterozygosity had a range from 0.14 - 0.20 for both hatcheries strains and local strains. GIFT base showed the lowest heterozygosity 0.14 and the highest and the highest was 0.20 in Hung Yen GIFT and Hanoi local strains. The genetic distance was measured between GIFT strains and local strains. The close genetic distance between GIFT base and two hatcheries GIFT strains in Hanoi and Hung Yen province indicating the management of stocks has not resulted in large genetic changes. The closer between Hai Phong strain with two local stocks sampled, this indicated either a high level of introgression of this population with a local strain in the area or that the wrong stock was introduced instead of GIFT strain in 1998. Broodstock management in these hatcheries and farms were also included in this study. More detail the results on broodstock management and data from electrophoresis were combined in discussion section. For further work and strategies planning broodstock management were recommended in this study. |
