AbstractThis paper is aimed at assessing the current stage of Internet Banking services in Vietnamese banking sector, explaining the current situation by identifying and analysing baniers to the development of those services in Vietnam and then coming up with perspectives and challenges of this kind of service. The four Vietnamese state owned commercial banks namely Vietcombank, Incombank, BIDV and Agribank were under investigation. Interviews were carried out with representatives of the four banks. Also, this study tries to clarify the customer's view on Internet Banking in Vietnam by conducting survey with a sample of 100 customers in Incombank. Beside interviews, this research used archival analysis of documents related to the field of research prepared by The Ministry of Trade, The Ministiy of Planning and Investment, The State Bank of Vietnam and the four banks, subject to internal circulation and seconda1y data from journals and newspapers as well. The results indicated that Vietnamese Internet banking services are still in their infancy because of three reasons: firstly, inadequacy of IT infrastructure and the lack of banks' IT workforce; secondly, customer factors including: customers' habit of using cash, unawareness of those services, their low access to internet and limited IT skills and inconvenience they face while using those services; Lastly, the lack of legal frame work and regulation on online contract, electronic documents, electronic signatures and customer's privacy protection. In despite of these baniers Internet banking in Vietnam has its perspectives. Internet banking helps banks take a revolution and modernize the whole banking system, brings benefits to customers, reduce the cost for the banks, etc. Both perspectives and challenges have implications for Vietnamese banks and the government to find out solutions to build up more comprehensive Internet banking system. The researcher, in her opinion, proposed some solutions which might be useful for the promotion and facilitation of Internet banking services in Vietnam.
