AbstractDespite the impo11ance of domestic tourism, there is a lack of study on the evolution and present condition of the domestic tourism market in Vietnam, especially in national domestic tourism whose demand has been increasing thanks to recent emerging of a middle class in the society. In order to promote domestic tourism to meet the needs of customers, contribute more on national economic development and towards sustainable development, studies have to be carried out to find out the most appropriate and effective strategies, planning, policies. The research study attempts to examine consumer pattern of domestic tourism in Vietnam through three main objectives: to analyze the current situation and identify the opportunities for domestic tourism in Vietnam, to define the customer profile for domestic tourists in both sides: free individual tourists going by themselves and tourists using package tour through travel company, and to suggest proper strategies to promote domestic tourism. Through literature review and interview with expe11s in the tourism industry, situational analysis of domestic tourism market is identified. In addition, the information from tour operators and current tourist's survey is used to answer the questions of who the customers are, what their needs and wants are, and how to satisfy their needs. Strategies are suggested using Marketing Mix model. Finally, recommendations towards sustainable development of Vietnamese domestic tourism are made based on reviewing opportunities in the near future. The study results may provide useful information for government agencies, tour operators and local destination management bodies in planning, managing and deploying the domestic market as its potentials.
