AbstractThis study developed the GIS based accident database management system for the selected study area, Khon Kaen, Thailand by providing the graphical users interfaces for motorcycle accident analysis. To analyze the motorcycle accidents in Khon Kaen, this study employed the unconventional method by using the medical information to perform the analysis. Data were obtained from Trauma Registry records of the Khon Kaen Regional Hospital. Prior to further investigate the contributing factors to motorcycle accidents, it is essential to determine the needs to conduct such investigations. Results of the accident analysis in Khon Kaen revealed that about 90 percent of all accidents occurred in this study area were motorcycle accidents. Thus, it is crystal clear that motorcycle accidents cannot be overlooked and need to be further investigated To determine the factors inducing severity of accident, severity indices are required for assessing this problem. This study employed a new approach to manipulate the existing data through the multi-disciplinary approach. It is a process of combining both engineering and medical experts to co-develop the road accident database system. The significant factors that contributed to motorcycle accidents can be simply examined and viewed the results by clicking process as this research developed the user friendly interfaces for any users particu larly the hospital staff to access to the database system. In addition, hospital staff can also update and edit the input data as well as to review any findings of the analysi s. Several factors that contribute to motorcycle accident occurrence were examined. It was found that not only the time of accident occurrence could affect the severity of motorcyclists, but the rider characteristics as well as risk factors such as wearing helmet or drunken riders also induce the severity of motorcycle victims. Regarding risk factors, the severity of victims who did not use safety helmet or drunk while riding would have tendency to face higher severity when accident occurred.
