AbstractThis research attempts to extend safety consideration into geometric design standards for highways. Highway No. I from station 121 +200 to station 123+400 is investigated and analyzed as a case study. GIS techniques are used to illustrate the results of this study in graphics and tabular forms. Failure in the design and construction at this roadway section (Highway No.1 from ST A 121+200 to ST A 123+400) creates high rate of accident occurrence. Lack of proper traffic signs, inconsistent standards, insufficient taper lengths and inappropriate horizontal alignment are the main problem that could generate traffic accident at this section, especially when the drivers are not familiar with this highway. This study proposed some recommended designs to encourage safety for all road users. Safety guidelines, which were developed from recent studies and based on safety considerations, were applied for safety design to this section. ArcView 3.2a, which is one of GIS (Geographic Information System) software, was used to illustrate the result of this study in both graphical and attribute forms. Images and attribute data of recommended design were displayed along the hazardous locations of this study area. Cross sections and recommended alignment were also displayed within Arc View's application windows for the better expression.
