AbstractTransportation development is becoming more important along with the rapid growth of economic development and urbanization. Strategic transportation development is necessary for sustainable urban development. Subway is the ideal way to meet transportation needs, because of large-scale economics and less pollution associated with it. Shenzhen, one of China's five leading Special Economic Zones (SEZ), is a vibrant commercial and international trading center neighboring Hong Kong. Luohu District, located at the heart of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, is a financial, information and shopping center. Through rapid, stable, and sustainable development of more than ten years, Luohu today is transformed into a modern cosmopolitan downtown hub. With the development of economy and the rapid growth of population, Luoho meets more and more serious traffic problems. At this backdrop, the subway construction is the most promising project in Luohu. However, no development project is an unmixed blessing. Social, economic and environmental impacts are common. In the above background, this study analyzes the impacts of subway construction on Luohu district, by focusing on the impacts of subway construction on the traffic, social, economy, environmental people's life. Impacts on environment such as air pollution, noise, and water are especially emphasized. The study shows that the subway construction can reduce the heavy burden of public transportation, facilitate the social and economic development, improve the life quality of people and reduce the environment pollution. Its positive effects to the urban development are en01mous. During the construction, the residents experienced some environmental problems such as noise, air and dust pollution, also the subway construction have led the traffic congestion due to the traffic lane occupied by the construction site. Studying the impact of the negative effects and analyzing the relevant minimizing way are therefore discussed in the report. Lessons from the studying, subway is one important criteria for the cities development, its environmental friendly characteristic with the beneficial economic typical make it a valuable way for other Chinese big cities to learn and the Shenzhen subway's construction will provide more priceless experience for them to study.
