AbstractA large number of potable water, wastewater and metro schemes projects are being built and extended in the Bangkok, capital of Thailand. These have invariably utilized mix of EPB TBMs and large diameter pipe jacking to constmct tunnels in the marine clays on which the city is built. This study was made to document a major pipe jacking work of Samut Prakarn Wastewater Project, which involve installation of 3-m diameter concrete pipe in the soft clay layer for a distance of 30.5 Ian. Some 65 jacking and receiving shafts were installed along a roadway, and 43 intermediate shafts made for c01mection with new collector sewers. The line of the tunnel follows the coast of the main highway, Sukhumvit Road. In shaft design, base stability, bearing capacity, lateral earth pressure and hydrostatic uplifted pressure were checked. Jacking load was back calculated from actual jacking force data. The resistance could be reduced by lubrication with bentonite or polymer. A total of 28 km of pipe had been installed at an average drive rate of 12 m per shift. The best production has been 11 No. of 3 m pipes in one (12-hour) shift. It takes around 25 minutes for a pipe change and 50 minutes to jack each pipe. Difficulties were found mainly is changes of ground condition, inadequate controlled of alignment and grade, and underground obstruction
