AbstractIn the electronic payment arena, payment via credit/ debit card is widely accepted thanks to Visa and MasterCard. However, the most of the credit/ debit cards are the magnetic stripe based which causes numerous fraud amounts. The magnetic sh·ipe is the old technology which is easily counterfeited. Therefore, smart card technology will replace the magnetic stripe credit/ debit cards. Smart card employs the secure technology which is used by many financial institutions in Europe. The trend of smart card usage has recently entered into Thailand due to the EMV standard. According to EMV, Thailand has to migrate from magnetic stripe card and readers to chip based card and readers. Therefore, the replacement of both card and terminals in Thailand is expected. Currently, the card issuers and acquiring banks in Thailand are now thinking of the work plan for such migration. Due to the migration, the opportunities lie to the world leading Point of Sales Terminal manufacturers and Elech·onic Data Capture (EDC) vendors in Thailand. Hence it is interesting to study the strategy employed by the world leading Point of Sales Terminal manufacturers in France, which is the country where the smart card was invented and houses many head offices of world players in the sma11 card industry. From the study, it is shown that strategic alliance is one of the important strategies for peneh·ation sh·ategy into foreign countries and also for technology h·ansfer. Also, part of their strategies can be adopted by Thai elech·onic transaction companies. This study provides the background of the smart card and the terminals used in the financial market, the current situation of the financial smart card industry in France and Thailand, environmental and competitive analysis of Thai financial smart card in the perspective of EDC vendors. Then, the recommendation is provided.
