AbstractThe behavior of soft Bangkok clay below the State Boundary Surface has been studied in detail under compression and extension loading conditions by canying out series of tests: eleven isotropic consolidated specimens on overconsolidated drained tests, two overconsolidated undrained tests and two normally consolidated undrained tests. All overcosolidated specimens were performed under selected stress paths with the same OCR of 10. Initial pre-shear void ratios were within a narrow band of 1.97 to 2.10. Consolidation and swelling parameters /.. and K values are 0.48 and 0.105,respectively. The M values corresponding to the peak deviator stress and peak stress ratio condition are 0.91 and - 0.83 under compression and extension, respectively. Based upon the observed experimental results shear strain, volumetric strain and plastic volumetric strain contours were drawn. The shear strain contours were drawn in the normalized (pipe, q/pe) plot. From the total volumetric strain contours plot, the area within the State Boundary Surface is the positive zone (Zone I). According to plastic volumetric strain, the area can be divided into two zones. In Zone II and Zone III, plastic volumetric strains are positive and negative, respectively The experimental results from this investigation will provide a useful contribution toward the prediction of models.
