| Abstract | Credit activity is indispensable pa11 of commercial banks. Its role is even more important to commercial banks of developing countries like Vietnam. In an economy with weak financial market, commercial banks have become a main source of financing for production and commerce that contribute substantially to economic development. At any bank, risk is always inherent in lending business and without adequate lending practice, possible loss is unavoidable. Last some years, with many effo1ts to build up stronger banking system, Vietnam's banks have also experienced many disappointed lending cases. The reason explaining for such cases is from non-performing loans. Therefore, credit quality is always a big concern of all commercial banks at all the time. Arising from the practical status of Vietnam commercial banks, the research has analyzed deeply the credit activities of a commercial bank, taking the case of Vietnam International Commercial Joint Stock Bank (VIB). The research will introduce operation procedure, existing practice and operation result of credit activity at VIB. Selected typical cases of bad loan are introduced to analysis the weakness of credit activity, both credit evaluation for lending and loan monitoring. The research proposes a model to support credit officers in the making decision in lending and other recommendations are suggested. Recommendations and suggestions are given to improve credit quality at VIB, mitigating the risk in lending and making credit activity safer, stabilizer and more efficient. |
