Abstract | Samsung's history is very peculiar: experiencing difficulties in its activities in the 80s, the company decided to focus on its semiconductor activity and become a major world player in this field. Following this, Samsung took advantage of its newly acquired know-how, financial assets and technological capabilities to copycat the state of the art technologies available on the market. This strategy opened new opportunities for the firm to create its own innovations and acquire a leading position in some high-tech business activities. This paper will intend to find out how Samsung has achieved its transition from a lowly-profitable company to a viable follower, to finally become a marketleader/ maker. This paper will use theoretical models (like for instance about technology replication and acquisition) and apply them concretely to Samsung's case. |
