AbstractThis study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using rock filters (RF) units to treat percolate from constructed wetlands (CW) fed with a municipal septage. The main objectives were to determine suitable operating conditions of the RF units in removing NH/- N compounds and to develop a kinetic model for using in RF design and operation. Within the effluent recirculation ratios (Q/Qi) of 0-2, a suitable HRT for the RF units was found to be 2 days. The NH/-N removal efficiencies were found to increase with increasing QrlQi ratios. A batch study revealed that NH4+-N removal in the RF units was due to the Anammox reactions and nitrification/ denitrification reactions. Within the experimental conditions employed in the study, tracer study showed the flow pattern in the RF units to approach plug-flow conditions. A first-order kinetic model was developed which correlated to NH/-N removal efficiencies with HRT, QrlQi ratios and temperature. Although this kinetic model can be used in RF design and operation, more model validation with full-scale RF performance data is recommended.
