AbstractThe study was conducted to develop a database, which is to store data on different biological wastewater treatment processes. This study was performed with the following steps to handle different data related to the design and operation of biological wastewater treatment processes in the database. (1) Information collection from text books on different wastewater treatment processes. (2) Development of database and data entry into it. The data entered were collected from literatures and from industries. FileMaker Pro (FileMaker Inc., USA) was used as the database engine. The developed database fulfills the following conditions: (1) all the essential parameters identified above can be handled, (2) duplication of data entry was avoided, and (3) the user interface was simple enough, and ( 4) it also provided aspect as a simple textbook on different biological wastewater treatment technologies. Relational database was employed to fulfill the condition (2). The developed database can store for the same wastewater treatment plant plural sets of data taken on different days or periods under different conditions. Data for plural locations on the same occasion about the same wastewater treatment plant can be stored. The number of water quality parameters and design/operational parameters that can be handled is infinite. In addition, the database can handle image. Target users of the database could be mainly university students, wastewater treatment engineers in municipalities, industries, and consulting companies. The database will be useful not only to store their operational data but also to compare the operation and performance of wastewater treatment plants. The database will also be helpful when an engineer has to select from many processes the most suitable one for his/her purpose. The database will also be helpful for people in general who wants to share information of wastewater treatment in the region where he/she lives. Strong promotion to these users is worth to be made. This study is the first step for further researches but it is simple enough for users to view, create a new record, edit, or update their information later. The database is easily searchable and additional data entry can be performed. With further improvement of the database and strong promotion to potential users, the database has a potential to become a common platform to store and exchange data between researchers in the field.
