| Abstract | The use of smart cards for conducting E-commerce is rapidly becoming a commercial reality. The impact of, and prospects for, online smart card payments are fa r-reaching. Sma1t card manufacturers are reassessing their competencies in light of the Internet. EMV migration and the advent of new applications with the smart cards is not only a positive for the customers but also a hope for revival for the smart cards companies. The research study tries to give the prospects for a new aspirant in the smart cards industry to make the strategic options to enter a market. To support the strategic options for the new entrants, detailed study was done on key markets, the value chain and the vertical markets in the industry. The markets discussed were France, U.K, Italy and the Asia Pacific market. A complete analysis of all the elements of the value chain was done, to illustrate their position in the industry. Vertical Markets discussed were e-government, transportation, telecom and epayments. Finally, the study formulated general recommendations based on the findings in the smart cards industry. |
