Govermnent has the responsibility of developing friendly policies to encourage the flow of technology into the country. Thailand automotive parts industry has been one of the industries that have received constant support by the government. Policies such as the local content requirement and the high tariffs structure has encourage teclmology transfer into Thailand. Technology transfer is further promoted with the abolishment of the local content requirement in order to promote competition. In order to fully understand the extent of the transfer, the study was conducted at the teclmology component level. The results revealed that the Thailand automotive parts industry has reached a high level of sophistication in terms of the four teclmology components with humanware reaching the highest sophistication level. Teclmological distance as perceived by local firms between foreign investor and local firms are also decreasing. Most firms perceive the teclmology gap between 5-10 years for products and production process. Some firms even perceived no technology gap at all. The results demonstrate a positive outlook on the capabilities of the automotive parts manufacturer. |
