AbstractThis study was conducted to investigate the feasibility and performance of the upgraded conventional septic tank by integrating in-tank baffles. A mixture of Bangkok septage and AIT wastewater was used as influent, imitating toilet wastewater. The influent had an average COD concentration of 2,000 mg/L, BOD concentration of 320 mg/L, TS concentration of 1,300 mg/L, TSS concentration of 1,350 mg/L. Experiment was set up with four laboratory-scale septic tank units. The operating conditions were varied on number of baffles ranging from 2-3 baffles, and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) ranging from 24 to 48 hours. At the HRT of 48 hours, all three reactors integrated with in-tank baffles showed to better performance treating wastewater than the reactor that represented a conventional septic tank. The baffle septic tanks were found to have effluent COD removal of 80-85%, and TS removal of 63-67%. The conventional septic tank had effluent COD removal of 73% and TS removal of 58%. When operating under HRT equaled to 48 hours, septic tanks with intank baffles had, approximately, the same removal efficiencies. When operating at HRT of 24 hours, the three-baffle septic tank showed to have higher removal efficiencies (COD of 90% and TS removal of 50% ), comparing to other treatment units.
