Abstract | Leadership is an important element in management. However in the construction industry, little attention has focused on this topic. The purpose of this thesis is to study the leadership styles of construction managers in Laos both for the government and private sector, and to determine how each style affects project performance. With better understanding about the relationship between leadership styles and performance, managers can improve productivity among workers by following appropriate management approach. The results of leadership style measurement are divided into natural leadership style and actual leadership style. The nature leadership style of Laos project managers is relationship-orientated, socio-independent, and with less concern for task accomplishment. The actual leadership style of Laos project managers more participative in the feasibility study and precontract stages of works, and tend to be more supportive in the construction stage of works. The result of subordinates' preferred leadership style measurement indicates that the project team members prefer managers with medium task structure for their organization. To attain this objective, human resources development plan under the Ministry of Communication Transport Post and Construction should be learned from both staff that works within the government and private sector in order to receive the most appropriate project manager. |
