AbstractTo control cost is an obvious objective of most managers because it facilitates construction organizations to accomplish the goal of profit maximization. Nevertheless, an ineffective cost control system of many Thai contractors has caused failures to controlling own cost status. To overcome those problems, proposing appropriateness and requirements of effective system were conducted. This study assessed competency and deficiencies of the conventional system as well as. the severity degree of each function that effect to the cost control system from contractors point of view. Moreover, the key construction personnel's performance with defined responsibility within the existing system was also identified. Five supportive systems of cost control are theoretically defined as framework for conducting this study. The collecting data from both large and small to medium construction companies was employed for comparison purpose by using the checklists and in-depth structured interview tools.
