AbstractMeasurements of air pollutants (NOx, CO, benzene, toluene, and xylene) on both sides of a street canyon in Bangkok were carried out. Simultaneously, hourly traffic volumes and traffic speed as well as wind data were collected. The hourly concentrations were observed to reach 526 ppb for NOx and 16 ppm for CO. The highest levels reached for benzene, toluene, m&p-xylene, and o-xylene were 4913 μg/m3 , 655μg/m3 , 172 μg/m3 , and 68 μg/m3 , respectively. The street canyon effects were also evaluated. Most of the results showed that the windward side has lower concentrations than the leeward side. Based on the traffic data obtained, the traffic patterns in all days of the week except Sunday were almost similar. This must be related to the human activities in the area. Significant correlation was observed between traffic volume and concentrations of the pollutants, indicating that traffic is the main source of these pollutants in the area. On-road vehicle emission factors in Bangkok were also estimated by inverse calculation using a dispersion model. The estimated emission factor for CO was 26 g/km from motorcycles; 57 g/km for NOx from trucks and buses; and 1.10, 0.92, 0.32 g/km for benzene, toluene, and xylene, respectively from a group composed of motorcycles, private cars and taxi.
