Abstract | This study aimed to make use of paper mill cake by converting it into a disposable bin. In addition, properties of all materials used as well as the bin itself were evaluated in terms of bin forming material and its negative impacts on the environment. Sludge cake should be prepared in a slurry form to further develop into a sheet of bin. This slurry however needed a supporting material as well as a binder. From the experiments showed that the candidate for materials selected to be used were cloth and latex in saturated condition. The criteria on sheet (bin) development are based on its maximum tensile stress, weight, thickness and water absorption. This is because it is anticipated treat the bin can be used anywhere in the industry even in the toilet or bathroom. The inferior points of this already made sheet included dried very slowly, not uniform thickness, odor problem and difficult to control uniform shape due to active shrinkage of fibers whenever rapid evaporation from slurry occurred. Control on sheet preparation such as drying process is recommended. Thus it needs further study to develop technique for improving its quality in the future. The sheet that had been made from this study may have other applications besides making the disposable bin. For outdoors' activities, this sheet can be used to make the shading roof for the orchid farm or container for small plants. Finally, from the result of toxicity tests (leaching and germination) show that the tendency to dispose it to landfill is possible due to its safety level of lead, nickel and copper and also not to cause plant toxicity but tend to seedling growth. Furthermore, the bin can serve as soil conditioner by improving soil porosity and texture through introduction of biodegradable material to soil. Thus, organic carbon content added and soil microbial activity increased can be expected when the material is disposal to the soil. |
