AbstractEquipment performance is an important factor determining the success of a construction project. However, optimum performance of equipment cannot be achieved unless the operators are properly trained. Therefore, the improvement of training for operators is critical for operator's performance improvement. This research is mainly concerned with the training-related issues for equipment operators in construction companies in Viet Nam. The necessary data was collected via questionnaire survey and interviews with construction people and equipment suppliers. Although most of construction people aware the necessity and benefits of operators training making an advantage for training implementation, a gap between the current and the desired performance of operators was identified, showing a need to improve training system. The most important problems that are concerned by operators are inadequacy of training facilities, language obstacle as well as unsuitability of training design. The research also identified several problems of training providers including inadequacy of need assessment, training evaluation and improper training management. Other problems related to new equipment delivery include negligence of training clause in purchasing contracts, low motivation of suppliers when conducting training for end-users' operators. Based on what was found in the analysis, measures to improve training systems are suggested.
