AbstractNew video coding standards are emerged from the desire and requirements of customers. Thus, the quality of video sequences compressed by video codec like H.26x and MPEG family may fall dramatically when they are carried over error prone environments. Now MPEG-4 video coding standard are latest for video environments and the compressed coding of Fine Granularity Scalable (FGS) becomes the hottest issue. Mobile channels exhibit very high bit error rates and errors tend to occur in bursts. Among measures to combat with these phenomena, a lot of error control coding is available. In this thesis, we have found that the turbo code produced the best performance for given constraints on the characteristics of mobile wireless channels and video transmissions. Using the designed turbo code, we then considered two wireless transmission schemes POFDM and VOFDM in connection with MPEG-4 FGS video concept for high performance video transmission over third and fourth generation mobile channels. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is being considered as a guaranteed candidate for high data rate transmissions in a frequency selective radio channels due to its robustness against multipath fading and impulse noise. Nevertheless, the performance of OFDM system may be degraded when inter-symbol interference (ISI) channels have spectral nulls. In addition, when ISI channels have many taps, the data rate overhead due to the insertion of the cyclic prefix is high. There are two schemes to improve performance of OFDM system over multipath fading channel and to reduce the cyclic prefix, called precoded and vector OFDM (POFDM, VOFDM). The normative MPEG-4 FGS video provides no error resilience tools. Error control codings for MPEG-4 FGS video are still under investigation and testing. Instead of the recovery mechanisms and codings, channel coding and suitable transmission channel can handle the low error at lower SNR in simulation results. With these two schemes in turbo coding, VOFDM shows better performance than POFDM by receiving higher average PSNR in image configuration quality at simulated respective speeds.
