AbstractMulticast technology is an attractive solution for Internet applications. Congestion control of real time multicast traffic in a network containing many types of services should consider their utility functions to maximize benefit for all users. TCP-Friendly Multicast Congestion Control (TFMCC) is a suggested congestion control protocol for multicast traffic. It uses minimum acceptable receiver rate to smoothen multicast traffic and achieve fairness compared to the TCP in long term throughput. This thesis work evaluates TFMCC performance in the network and proposes an extension of individual multicast control algorithm to TFMCC for supporting better benefit to all internet participants, network operator, service provider and user, applying the utility optimization approach. Due to the aggregate characteristic of utility function, it is suitable to use the receiver-oriented utility function for multicast service. The Optimization-based Multicast Congestion Control (OMCC) proposed in this study modifies the TFMCC estimated rate function based on receiver-oriented logarithmic and TCP utility functions in Network Simulator-2 (NS-2) as the first implementation experiment of utility-based Multicast Congestion Control. Simulation results show that OMCC brings slightly better network performances in multicast session throughput while it still keeps a certain fairness of unicast and multicast, and thus provides better benefit for all participants.
