AbstractThis thesis mainly evaluated support requirements in tunnel excavations for grouting and drainage purposes at Tha Dan Dam. Rock mass classifications were carried out by the RMR and Q system. In the studied area, rocks were commonly complex volcanic rock and rock mass was predominantly of fair to good class. Rock supports for these tunnels were initially designed using both the RMR and Q-System rock classifications. However, both designs were not used and the actual support installations were made according to the estimation of the engineer. These rock supports designs were compared and the actual supports were also compared with equivalent rock load around the tunnels. The loosening rock loads were predicted by the RMR and Q values.
