AbstractThe project under study is the construction of the 23 km long Water Transmission Tunnel in Bangkok in three contracts. The first starts from Tak Sin - Phet Kasem Interchange to Tua Phra pumping station, the second and the third starts from Bangkhen to Ngangwongwan Road and Suwinthawong to Nitmitmai Road, respectively. This thesis reviews and evaluates the performance of shield tunnel excavation works of the projects, where seven earth pressure balanced (EPB) type tunnel boring machines (TBM) were used in stiff clay and water bearing sand. The tunnel operations and performance of the shield machines in Bangkok's subsoil and the segmental lining are presented. Penetration and advance rates were collected and calcurated. They showed that the tunnel progress was in accordance with the planed advance rate of 300 m/month for each TBM. The problems and difficulties arisen were damages and leakage of segmental lining but they were minor. It was proven that the EPB shield could successfully advance in the kind of soils. A instrumentation result show that the surface settlement induced by tunneling in different clay and sand layers were not too excessive. The average volume of ground Joss (VL) was about 0.26 to 1.0 percent. The results of ground movement induced by tunnel boring machines in Water Transmission Tunnel are summarized.
