Abstract | This thesis compiled and interpreted the observed lateral wall movement and ground surface settlement of 16 station excavations of the Bangkok MRT ISP Blue Line project to examine the perfo1mance of the station box excavations in Bangkok subsoil. Predictions of lateral ground movement using PLAXIS Version 7 were performed by plane strain effective and total stress analysis in undrained conditions with the Mohr-Coulomb model. Predictions were conducted using strength and stiffness parameters extracted and calculated from boreholes adjacent to the specific sections and averaged parameters as used in the design. Three types of deflected shapes of lateral wall movement were observed at certain ranges of excavation depths, namely cantilever mode, braced excavation modes in soft and stiff soil. The maximum observed lateral wall movement was 47.4 mm and 42.7 mm, while the maximum ground surface settlement was 57.7 mm and 75.14 mm, at stations in South and North Contracts respectively. Variation in soil profile along a station box affected the resulting ground movement. Hence, predictions using parameters calculated from specific boreholes nearest to the sections gave better results than predictions using averaged design parameters. Predictions using total stress analysis did not differ much from predictions using effective stress analysis. |
