AbstractIt is widely known that exhaust gas from both diesel trucks and buses in Bangkok have potentials to cause severe health effect. This study focused on the upward extension of exhaust pipe to level above the bus roof level in order to reduce the concentration of pollutants at the breathing level. Ambient concentration of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and PMlO were monitored to estimate the contribution from a running bus with original and upward extended exhaust pipes in free flow highway, Chiang Rak Noi road, and street canyon case, Pracha U-Thit road. Sampling point was located at a distance of three meters from the running bus lane on the downwind roadside and at one-meter height. The data was recorded every second while the study bus was running at stable speeds of 20, 40, 60 and 80 km/hr. Wind speed and wind direction data was also recorded for every bus speed. Upward extension of exhaust pipe resulted in lower ambient pollutant concentrations as compare to the original exhaust pipe at the Chiang Rak Noi road and the Pracha U-Thit road. However changes in wind speed and directions between the measurement may caused the incompatibility of the results between the 2 cases. Mathematical model was applied to predict the concentration at downwind distances using Gaussain dispersion equation. The on-road emission measurement was conducted for the model input. Measurement and modeling results showed that the upward extension of exhaust pipe can reduce the ambient concentration at the breathing level. Modeling result showed that the extension of exhaust pipe, 3.95 meters, can reduce ambient concentration of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon at breathing level by a factor of around 3. The ratio between maximum concentration from measurement data and modeling result varies in the range of 2-186. Most of public opinions agree with the adaptation of the technology. The cost of installation varies from 1500 to 2000 Baht. The cost for rerouting exhaust pipe in the bus is estimated to be in the range of 10000 to 20000 Baht. For a truck, the cost ranges from 2000 to 3000 Baht for a steel pipe and from 10000 to 15000 Baht for stainless pipe.
