Abstract | This review aims to analyze the impact of management of technology in the energy industry by bringing together various theories and bodies of knowledge to enable the reader to understand the state of the energy industry today and to assess the main factors affecting its future development. Technology is of immeasurable importance to the energy sector. Other sectors can survive without technology as the other factor inputs, capital and labour, are not finite. However, the technology sector is constrained to develop technology enabling the fu1ther production of energy due to the finite nature of its natural inputs. The issues thus faced by the sector when imagining, developing and managing technology must therefore be addressed through a consistent, proactive and positive academic research but also by the stakeholders of the industry. This review shows that the energy industry is in a mature phase. Existing technologies are well tried and well known. However, without technological advances the industry will slowly start to decline and then reach a point of crisis when all existing reserves are consumed. Thus, renewal must occur through technological improvement and breakthrough. The successful management of this technological renewal must therefore be central to energy companies' corporate strategy. |
