AbstractWith the growing popularity of the Internet, more users connect to their Internet Service Provider (ISP) via the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN); therefore, measurement and analysis of Internet traffic in PSTN are important for network management and operation purposes. The statistical information of the Internet network traffic is needed for operator to know the behavior of Internet users in PSTN. This research study demonstrates the Internet traffic measurement process in a fixed telephone network of Ho Chi Minh City. The Internet call attempts in a fixed telephone network are analyzed. Beside this the hourly traffic flow measurement of different weekdays for both Internet traffic and total traffic in the network are investigated. The Internet call holding times and the Internet subscriber traffic distribution based on call charging data are studied. The mean call holding time, the day to day Internet traffic variation, and related subscriber behavior in the network are demonstrated. The results of traffic measurements show that during a week 11.5 % of total 43,025 subscribers of the network use the Internet and 3.8 % all calls are Internet calls. The daily call profiles show that Internet calling rate during the evening hours is higher than during the day hours. Usually half of total Internet subscribers access the Internet per day. The mean value is approximately 3 calls per day per subscriber and 11 calls per week per subscriber. The Internet carried traffic was 3,262 Erlang hour per day and total canied traffic was 13,105 Erlang hour per day. Performed measurements have clearly shown that Internet call duration can not accurately be modeled by exponential distribution. The hourly mean holding time of Internet calls during a day typically varies between 8 minutes and 28 minutes. The average daily value of Internet subscriber traffic is 27.6 mErl and total subscriber traffic is 12.7 mErl.
