AbstractNowadays, wireless local loop (WLL) is a promising solution to the infrastructure problem of telecommunication network in Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. However, most of the WLL networks deployed in HCMC have provided only voice services. Moreover, evaluation of performance of these networks as well as planning for development is always dependent on equipment suppliers. This research study presents a general approach for evaluating the performance and planning for development of the existing WLL network. Performance evaluation of CDMA WLL network is based on investigation of traffic measurements on the radio channels of a real WLL network in case of IS-95A WLL in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. The main performance measures that are call blocking, call drop rate and carried traffic of network are examined and compared with GOS target values in ITU-T Recommendation E.771. The result of measurement shows that both way call blocking is around 2%, which does not satisfy GOS target value, but this difference is not significant, thus offered traffic approximately equals carried traffic. Observed call drop rate is 1.04% and mean carried traffic per user is around 32 mErl. Network planning for development of the existing IS-95A WLL network in this research is carried out in the urban, suburban, and rural areas in HCMC, Vietnam for duration of 5 years (2003-2007) with historical data to be collected in seven years (1996- 2002) and is focused on radio network planning that includes estimation of capacity, calculation of link budget and the required number of cell sites. The WLL demand including voice and data demand from 2003 to 2007 is around 50,000 subscribers and the number of required cells is approximately 19 cells, consisting of 10 urban, 7 suburban, and 2 rural cells. Result of this study will support to define a way for developing fixed wireless access in Ho Chi Minh City.
