Abstract | Bat Trang is a pottery village in Hanoi having nearly 1000 years of history and tradition as such it is and a popular tourism destination. As a result Bat Trang is facing an increasing pressure to manage its cultural treasures (pottery and historical buildings) by balancing demands of visitors, daily needs of Bat Trang residents and eco-system. This research uses a multidisciplinary approach to environmental management of Bat Trang focusing on assessment of the current environmental situation, land use, revenue, economic opportunities and tourism demand A survey carried out in Bat Trang shows an increasing income of the village during the past years. However, production of pottery put severe pressure on the environment. Emission from pottery kilns results in high levels of toxic gases and particulate matter concentrations, which serious affect to human health and exceed the national air quality standards of Vietnam. To mitigate these impacts a land use plan location pollution sources in the downwind direction of the village, cleaner new gas combustion technology for kilns was proposed to reduce air pollution level and increase product quality. Social economic measures such as environment tax, good governance, and awareness rising must be taken into account for the sustainable development of the Bat Trang community as a tourist destination as well as a Vietnamese heritage. |
