Abstract | Today, data traffic is growing much faster than telephone traffic. Voice over IP (VoIP) is the set of protocol that enables voice traffic to be transported over IP network with a suitable quality of service and a reducing cost. In Vietnam, customers can use VoIP service since October 2000. VoIP plays an important role in Vietnam telecommunication services. It is competing with Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS). The purpose of this study is to investigate the existing VoIP network of Vietnam. The work is based on existing network of three official providers, which are Vietel, VNPT and SPT. The study pays attention to VoIP traffic in Ho Chi Minh City, which is the biggest city in Vietnam. The traffic is measured on the period of the end of 2002. The type of Vietnam VoIP is Phone-to-Phone only. It is offered to all fixed subscribers at 39 cities and provinces. In 2002, VNPT is the biggest provider in domestic and outgoing-international markets but incoming-international VoIP market has a competitive between three providers. Providers need to expand new provinces, extend existing bandwidth. In near future, Vietnam telecommunications should be opened new VoIP services such as VoIP for mobile subscribers, PC-to-PC and PC-to-Phone. |
