Abstract | Kaetpara, is one of the villages in Gazipur district, a traditional rural village in Bangladesh. Kaetpara has a high prevalence of inequality in gender roles, gender relation responsibilities and the guidance of socio cultural norms, values and taboos where girls and women position are mostly vulnerable in knowledge, education and economic condition. Centre for Mass Education in Science (CMES), initiated Adolescent Girls Program in their basic school system was establish since 1991 for the purpose of empowering rural girls, providing technological knowledge and skill training, knowledge on social and legal rights and practices. They organized the program comprised of 17 units in the country as a whole. This research intend to study and identify girls knowledge, attitude and perception across the two groups (AGP and Not in AGP). The research will study the AGP groups, as they are going through the general education, income generation activities, credit scheme and Gender based education whereas girls outside the program are not in any way involved such program. The study describes the socio cultural factors of both groups, which can broadly influence the AGP girls participating in the program and explain the non- participation of girls outside the program. The field research was conducted utilizing mainly qualitative methods: semi -structured interview, focus group discussion and informal talks. Interventions of AGP with its income generation activities and credit scheme for adolescent girls, this study found that there are a major difference between two groups in their economic level and condition. Considering other factors of empowerment like knowledge on social and legal rights and their practices, girls of AGP are considerably in a better position, (at least few girls successfully can assert their rights and control over money decision making events) even though its not very satisfactory level. Still they face the socio cultural barriers of traditional beliefs and taboos, on obtaining social and legal rights and they cannot improve their status in the family as human beings. The research findings, concludes with the recommendation that the existing situation calls for the need of promoting the girls' situation rearranging the program method and policy by targeting the local community in this program, and sharpening the knowledge base of teachers and administrator of the program concerned. |
