AbstractThe Tha Dan Dam is being constructed on undifferentiated volcanic rock foundation of rhyolite, andesite, tuff, basaltic andesite, agglomerate and volcanic breccia. Various available laboratory test results, foundation insitu test results, seismic refraction data and bore hole logging records of the dam site and quarry sites were collected and reviewed. In general, geological condition of dam foundation was quite good, containing rock with high strength, low permeability and free from major shear zones. Slaking tuff and some highly fractured zones associated with dikes were locally observed. Data analyzed by the stereographic projection showed that there are three prominent sets of joint orientations along the dam foundation. Among them, third set intersects in perpendicular direction to the dam structure. Due to the lack of water pressure test before and after grouting at the time of study, the evaluation of the dam foundation treatment in this research was performed on the basis of grout take statistic method and core sampling. The high grout takes were only related with faults. Other than this area, low grout takes were generally found. The thick grout mix (w: c ratio = 1.1: 1 by weight) used in the consolidation grouting to achieve high strength and low grout pressure applied caused to poor penetration in very small opening of the joint system. Considerable improvement of grouting works, both in consolidation and curtain grouting, showed with grout holes spacing of 3 m.
