AbstractNam San and Nam Man are two mini hydropower projets selected by PEA (Provincial Electricity Authority) for implementation in the northeastern part of Thailand. The Nam San station is located in Phu Rua District and Nam Man station is located in Dan Sai District, both in Loei Province. Korat Group of mainly elastic sedimentary rocks dating from the Upper Triassic to the Cretaceous underlie both project areas. Nam San project area is located on the eastern flank of a broad, shallow N-S trending syncline. Bedding is typically recorded as dipping to the west at about 10°- 20°and Nam Man project area is situated on the eastern limb of the broad, shallow syncline, which trends approximately NNE-SSW. The bedding in the Nam Man valley dips typically at 5°- 10° westwards. The predominant rock types are sandstone, conglomeritic sandstone and siltstone. The bedding typically dips to the west at 10°- 20°. The average dip from logged exposures is 14° towards a bearing of255°-300°. Most of sandstones are fresh and thick bedded and the highest strength is 180 Mpa. This area was free of major geological structure. Joint systems in sandstone were mainly horizontal set and in siltstone, inclined joint were commom. Rock mass quality was classified using Q-system for use in tunnel support design. For the portal excavation of tunnel soil nail was used as slope protection measure.
