AbstractAim of this experiment was to measure anionic charges from different types of OCC pulp, and the effect of cationic of anionic trash on cationic starch and fines retention. Influence of anionic trash was investigated by measuring charge density, zeta potential and cationic starch retention. It was observed that anionic trash influences on cationic starch and fines retention, as well as inter-fiber bonding. Results show that the influence of PAC depends on the level of charge density. It is less effective at the pulps with lower anionic trash and fines content, but it is effective if the anionic trash or fines contents increase. It was also found that washing is an efficient process to getting rid of anionic trash, especially for the pulps with lower anionic trash contents. Cationic starch retains more in a pulp with higher percentage of fines. Important conclusion of this research study is that the cationic starch has marginal influence, if any, on compression strength development.
