Abstract | The purpose of this project was to find a suitable furnish for newsprint using Local Old Newspapers (LONP) and Local Old Magazine (LOMG) blend. Different pulp furnish was developed by mixing LONP and LOMG in different ratio. The white water was recirculated whenever a handsheet was made. Strength and optical properties of the samples including their printing quality were measured and compared with commercial paper at similar furnish components. It was observed that the best optical properties could be achieved at 50:50 ratio (i.e. LONP/LOMG) for unbleached pulps. At this ratio the optical and whiteness was higher than commercial newsprint, but the brightness was almost the same. As long as the strength was concerned, the 60:40 ratio in bleached samples had dominant quality. Tensile and the tear increased 20% in comparison to commercial newsprint. Printing quality of the furnish as judged by pick resistance and water absorption was the highest at 70:30 ratio in unbleached condition, but for bleached the ratio 60:40 was the best. The detail of these finding, was thoroughly discussed in the report. |
