Abstract | Groundwater flow is one of the main factors that can affect the natural environment. However it is very difficult to explore the flow pattern and grasp its regional charactetistics. Inappropriateness and troubles created by the available techniques such as artificial tracers, bothered scientists to think about thermal flow as a natural tracer. Therefore this research was done to investigate on the applicability of heat, as a natural tracer, in evaluating the groundwater flow profile. A Numerical model was formed to solve the governing equations of the coupled flow. Validity of this model was checked by comparing the results obtained from the available analytical solutions. This model was utilized in analyzing two realistic problems, which finally helped to draw general conclusions. It was found that the thermal flow could provide a qualitative guidance in evaluating the groundwater flow profile. The discrepancy between steadytransient analysis and transient-transient analysis is summarized on some charts. Provided the other soil and geometrical parameters, the cha1t could predict the most appropriate and economical type of analysis |
