AbstractThis study presents a decision support tool for a complex manufacturing system that consists of a graphical user interface for viewing input and output files, a scheduling program for schedule generation and a simulation program for schedule evaluation. The tool not only can generate schedules, but also can estimate performances and determine whether or not customer due date can be met. The well-known Giffer and Thompson scheduling algorithms for active and non-delay schedules are combined with some dispatching rules for creating schedules in the realistic job shop defined by the target factory. A discrete event simulation model of the production system is built using AutoMod. The system is implemented with C# with Visual Studio .N~T. The scheduling algorithm is implemented directly in C# while the simulation is done by calling AutoMod from within the program. With this system, various job shop problems are tested in order to select the algorithm that is the best alternative for the target factory. Based on the experiments, the Giffer and Thompson algorithm for non-delay schedule combined with short processing time dispatching rule is most appropriate for reducing production makespan in the target factory.
