AbstractThis study presents an efficient way to solve the production planning and scheduling problem of an assembly system in Vietnam, GM DAEWOO AUTO & TECHNOLOGY COMPANY. A hierarchical production planning & scheduling model and a heuristic algorithm were developed to solve the problem when considering setup cost incurring each time sequence of jobs switches in the workshops. Three linear programming models are formulated subjected to the plant attributes and management policies. Firstly, the work started with the linear programming model for Aggregate production planning applied to find monthly plans. Secondly, a linear programming model for Disaggregate production planning was formulated to solve the weekly plans, base on the output of first model. Finally, a heuristic algorithm was developed to find the optimal production sequence in order to minimize total setup costs and compared with solution of linear programming model. These procedures are implemented using Lingo 5.0 software and C++ program. Data collected from company is used to run models. The solution analysis and comparison with the existing plan are performed. Some recommendations are proposed for the management to make the production planning and scheduling more efficient and realistic.
