AbstractFive-axis machine is currently one of the most versatile machine tools. However, the errors introduced during five-axis machining are higher than the intrinsic repeatability of the machine tool. It is possible to identify such systematic errors and compensated for them, thus higher performance can be achieved. The geometric error of machine components is one of systematic errors that the main error sources. So, this study presents the methodology to obtain a compensation method of the geometric error for five-axis CNC milling machines. The compensation is based on software compensation technique with indirect measurement method or called "self-calibration". The error model is modeled by using rigid body kinematics. The error identification approach, which is used to identify the unknowns in the error model and based on the proposed reference piece, is presented in this study. Only rotary errors are focused in this study, translational errors are not investigated. Basic polynomial is used to estimate errors.
