AbstractFinancial crisis has hit many countries in recent decade. Korea was not an exception. Financial crisis, in general, can be attributed to weak financial system and insolvent corporate sector. As the crisis broke out, Korean government has taken various measures in order to resolve the crisis and heal the chronic problems of Korean financial sector. There have been decisive measures to strengthen prudential regulations, accounting system, supervisory function, and management transparency. As a result, Korean banking industry could come out of the crisis in early stages, and could achieve considerable improvement in soundness and profitability. Bank restructuring, however, has not been completed yet. Restructuring of Korean banks should be continued in order not to fall behind the international competition.
