AbstractChina's banking sector has long been dominated by the state-owned banks. The Big-four, which people call the four biggest state-owned commercial banks is the backbone for the whole industry. The problems of the Big-four, which are equivalent to the problems of the bank sector has already turned out to be the most serious troubles to the country's economic infrastructure. The opportunities and benefits to the banking sector after obtaining a WTO membership are huge. At the same time, it also brings in intense competition by allowing more foreign competitors to participate the domestic market. Given the weak performance of the domestic banks, China's banking sector will undoubtedly face severe challenges. Today the banking reform has become one of the most important but yet unaccomplished refo1ms for China. While the system deficiency and huge amount of NPLs pose as an internal force for the reform, China's commitment to WTO accession no doubt acts as an external force to step up the pace of reforms by pushing Chinese banks into international competition. Actually, the reform process of the bank sector, which involves largely the transformation of the Big-four, started about 25 years ago when China decided to change from planned-economy to market-oriented economy. It is a complicated and difficult process with many ups and downs. Now with more and more reform measures coming out to meet the new requirement brought by WTO accession, China's banking sector still has a long way to go and the outfit of reform, though positive, needs time to observe.
